"Firefighter for a day"
On Tuesday May 8th 2007, Forth One's Mark Martin and Forth2's Alex Boyd were invited to Colin McKirdy's "Firefighter for a Day" experience here at Edinburgh Airport.
Colin had bid for the experience in the Radio Forth Charity Auction in 2006.
The day involved the boys being trained as airport firefighters and involved a putting out a full plane fire, rescuing casualties from a burning plane wearing full breathing apparatus and dealing with a road traffic accident. The team were also treated to a proper firefighters lunch as well as a shot on an aircraft emergency slide!
Our guys were looked after by Watch Manager Les Mason and operational Blue Watch fire fighters, who were impressed by the efforts of the participants.
As a bonus treat, Colin, Mark and his kids were treated to a VIP tour of Edinburgh Airport’s Air Traffic Control tower as well as Young Airport Firefighter goodie packs.
Everyone had good fun and were well looked after by Blue Watch, it gave the team a real insight into the physicality’s and dangers that firefighters face every day.
You can check out some of the pictures from the day on our Online Gallery page.
